Going out to the movies in Nantes : the 3 Continents Film Festival

The 3 Continents Film Festival (Festival des 3 Continents) will be held in Nantes, from November 24 to December 1, 2009. For its 31st anniversary, the festival gets a makeover with a new team, a new programming organization and new initiatives for regular filmgoers and for people who still need to be convinced of the original, unexpected and unique aspect as well as the exclusiveness of this yearly event dedicated to Southern films.

An International Competition:

A unique competition with fictions and documentaries. 12 foreign long-length films, most of which were not released in France, will be presented in the presence of their director, or a member of the film’s cast. Made up of professionals, the jury will award two Grand Prix du Festival des 3 Continents, the Montgolfière d’Or, and the Montgolfière d’Argent. Two other awards will be given by the audience and a jury of younsters.

  • Bassidji by Mehran TAMADON (Iran / France / Switzerland, 2009, 114′, documentary)
  • Closure by Anat EVEN (Israel, 2009, 54′, documentary) – Internationale Premiere
  • Sex is no Laughing Matter by IGUCHI Nami (Japan, 2008, 120′)
  • Call if You Need Me by James LEE (Malaisia, 2009, 104′) – French Premiere
  • À la dérive by Chuyen BUI THAC (Vietnam, 2009, 110′) – French Premiere

Exclusive non-competing films:

Before their release on French screens, and if possible in the presence of the film team, long-length films noticed in international festivals as well as in southern countries by the festival’s programming team will be presented.

A Tribute to Kiyoshi KUROSAWA :

With about 15 films, some of which are exclusive in France, this year the festival pays tribute to young japanese film director Kiyoshi Kurosawa with the screening of the following films :

And also …

The festival will highlight some films from Africa, especialy from Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia. A special programming selected by Continent J will be proposed to youngsters for them to discover different cultures. Also, exclusive short-films by young directors will be presented with a focus on the themes of  progression and memoirs.
