From October 12, 2010 to March 13, 2011 the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presents MOEBIUS-TRANSE-FORME, the first major exhibition in Paris devoted to the work of Jean Giraud, more commonly known by his pseudonyms Gir and Moebius.

Undisputed master of the comic strip, inventor of extraordinary forms and a brilliant cartoonist, Moebius is an artist who goes beyond the traditional boundaries of the discipline. He developed a wide range of styles, from the detailed realism of Blueberry to the fantastical drawings of Arzach and Le Chasseur déprime. He is particularly renowned for his futuristic landscapes filled with hybrid creatures and ultrasophisticated spaceships, and which are conducive to bizarre, metaphysical musings.

Moebius has chosen the concept of metamorphosis as a central theme for this exhibition, which is the dominant leitmotiv of his comics, drawings, and film projects. the exhibition also presents his very first 3-D animated directed by the artist .

With landscapes and characters in perpetual transformation, his drawings explore the boundaries of the unconscious and reveal an imaginary and fantastic world. Through often sudden and disturbing metamorphoses of a character or a setting, Moebius reveals a world where appearances are not as stable as they may seem.

Between October 15, 2010 and January, 2011 the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris presents a large retrospective to Amercian artist Jean-Michel Basquiat for the 50th anniversary of his birth. Let’s focus on this artist who started to be famous through street art and his graffitis on the walls of the streets…

This is the first large-scale Basquiat exhibition ever in France. Of mixed Puerto Rican and Haitian descent, Basquiat was born in Brooklyn in 1960 and died of a drug overdose in New York in 1988, aged 27. Basquiat was part of the generation of graffiti artists who burst onto the New York scene in the late 1970s.

In the course of a dazzling career, his work moved from street art to painting, offering a mix of Voodoo and Biblical mythologies, comic strips, advertising and the media, African-American music and boxing heroes and assertion of his negritude. Thus he defined an underground urban counterculture at once violently anarchistic and seething with liberty and vitality.

With a hundred major pieces – paintings, drawings, objects – from numerous museums and private collections in the United States and Europe, this retrospective will allow the viewer a chronological overview of the career and the chance to assess Basquiat’s importance to art and art history in the post-80s years. It is also worth taking notice that Basquiat ended his carreer alongside Andy Warhol with whom he signed a few paintings.

The exhibition’s highlights…

How, through time and space, man kind deals with death, even trying to tame it or freeing himself from it ? The Desires for Eternity exhibition reflects the treasures of art and death, a universal concern which affects all societies. In our western society, especially in Europe, the way we deal with death has been changing for one century. Even today, new relational issues come to light. Patrick Baudry, a sociologist, and Pierre Gibert, a Jesuit and historian specialised in cultural matters, put into perspective this society issue.

A variety of objects, mainly from the collections of the Confluence Museum, is presented in the exhibition: archaeological collections from Egypt of the Pharaohs, from a Caucasian necropolis (1st Iron Age), from South-East Asia (10th century); ethnological collections of Fujian province in China, of Africa, of Australia (Aborigines), of New Caledonia (Kanaks) and France as well as contemporary collections (photographs, paintings, sculptures).

The exhibition’s themed trails

The exhibition offers 5 different themes to explore:

The fear of death and getting over it : everything has an end

Making agreements with the beyond, the quest for eternal living

Taming death, a new life

Going missing, hidden death

Conclusion, to each his own funeral

Until July 11, 2010, the Contemporary Art Museum of Lyon presents Rétrospective Ben Strip-Tease Intégral, the most important retrospective dedicated to the artist Ben Vautier. He is one of the major artists of the XXth century , known for its performances, installations and paintings.

With more than 1.000 works of art, this exhibition shows a 50-year carrier over 3000 m2 (i.e. all the rooms of the museum). The exhibition includes pieces starting from the very beginning at Nice to the most recent ones, through his appropriations, performances, paintings and installations.

For the first time, all the topics dear to Ben and which made him famous have been exhibited, gathered by series: Bananas, Ego, Gestures, Ethnism, Sex, Truth etc. This unprecedented event also includes new videos and pieces created especially for this occasion.

By setting Ben’s work in its historical context, this exhibition, due to its scope (the largest ever done), allows the visitor a deeper understanding of a world which he had probably only seen the media-related side.
