Paris – Exhibition : Teotihuacan, city of Gods

teotihuacan

Until January 24, 2010, the Quai Branly museum presents for the first time an exhibition dedicated to the mythical and mysterious civilisation of Teotihuacan, which features a unique 450 art pieces collection.

Ancient Mexico’s major city founded one century before Christ, Teotihuacan experienced a strong cultural and artistic dynamism until the seventh century. When the Aztecs discovered the city had been abandonned for 600 years, they named it “the place where Gods are born” as they were impressed by the size and the beauty of it.

Research conducted over the past 25 years have led to significant discoveries and led to better know this mysterious civilisation.

About 95% of the 450 unique art pieces of  Teotihuacan’s culture shown in this exhibiton belong to Mexican collections and 5% of them are part of European collections. These objects, most of which have never been shown neither in Europe nor in Mexico, are presented through successive themed areas so that visitors can understand the role of this ancient city in the Mesoamerican world, from historical, anthropological and mythological perspectives. The pieces exhibited give the opportunity to go right to the heart of the daily life of this extraordinary city. Huge and architectural sculptures, wall paintings, ritual masks, offering statues, jewelry and ceramics show how powerful Teotihucan’s art expression is.
